How does CLAT word direction questions?
Two real stems from 2018 and 2019, plus the three standard forms every direction set draws from. Each asks a different thing, so read the last line first.
| Stem | What it really asks | First move |
|---|---|---|
| '…his friend Y was walking towards him from his right side. In which direction is Y walking?' (2018 Q109) | Someone else's direction, fixed by the walker's right | Find the walker's final facing |
| 'Which direction is he facing now?' (2019 Q5) | Final facing only | Track facing; distances are decoys |
| 'How far is he from the starting point?' (standard form) | Straight-line distance | Net both axes, then Pythagoras |
| 'In which direction is he from the start?' (standard form) | Position, not facing | Read the end dot from the start dot |
| 'Her shadow fell to her left one morning…' (standard form) | Direction from the sun | Morning shadows point west |
How do left and right turns work on a compass?
A right turn is a quarter turn clockwise; a left turn is a quarter turn anticlockwise. Facing north, that matches the map. Facing any other way, it doesn't, and that is where the marks go.
| Facing | Turn right | Turn left | About-turn |
|---|---|---|---|
| North | East | West | South |
| East | South | North | West |
| South | West | East | North |
| West | North | South | East |
- •Same for everyone
- •Read off the map
- •'Walks 5 km east'
- •Depend on the facing
- •Change after every turn
- •'Turns left, walks 3 km'
| Test | Fixed directions | Relative turns |
|---|---|---|
| Facing south, 'left' is | — | East |
| Common trap | Forgetting to update facing | Using map-left |
What is the fastest method for direction-sense questions?
- 1
DrawNorth at the top, a start dot at the centre. One arrow per leg, distance on the arrow.
- 2
FaceAfter every turn, write the new facing (N, E, S, W) on the next leg. Never turn from memory.
- 3
NetTotal east minus west, total north minus south. Two numbers describe the end point.
- 4
AnswerFacing? Read the last arrow. Distance? Pythagoras on the two nets. Direction? Read the end dot from the start dot.
Here is Aarav's route, done properly. The diagram works out the end point itself, so you can check your own sketch against it.
Facing south, a left turn means east. Net: 3 km east, 2 km south. Distance = √(9 + 4) = √13 ≈ 3.61 km, south-east of the metro.
Which direction-sense traps does CLAT set?
Facing is not position
'Which way is he facing?' and 'where is he from the start?' have different answers more often than not. Below, the walker ends up facing south but standing due east of where he began.
The two 4 km legs cancel. He faces south, 3 km east of the start.
Net it, then Pythagoras
Distance from the start is a straight line, not the sum of the legs. Net each axis, then use the right triangle. Learn the triples CLAT-style setters love: 3-4-5, 6-8-10, 5-12-13, 8-15-17. If one net is zero, the distance is just the other net.
Net 6 km east and 8 km north: a 6-8-10 triangle. Walked 20 km, but only 10 km from the start.
'A from B' is not 'B from A'
Shadows and degree turns
| Time | Sun in the | Shadows fall | Shadow on your right means you face |
|---|---|---|---|
| Morning | East | West | South |
| Evening | West | East | North |
For angle turns, convert to degrees: N 0°, NE 45°, E 90°, SE 135°, S 180°, SW 225°, W 270°, NW 315°. Add for clockwise, subtract for anticlockwise, and wrap round 360°.
Can you solve direction questions step by step?
- 1Draw: 4 km up, then a right turn.
- 2Face: facing north, right is east, so 3 km east.
- 3Net: 3 km east, 4 km north.
- 4Answer: √(9 + 16) = 5 km, north-east.
- 1Draw four legs from the start dot.
- 2Face: south → left = east → left = north → right = east.
- 3Net: east 8 + 4 = 12 km; north 10 − 5 = 5 km.
- 4Answer: √(144 + 25) = √169 = 13 km, north-east; the cab faces east.
- 1Convert: north-east = 45°.
- 245 + 90 = 135° (south-east).
- 3135 − 135 = 0° (north).
- 40 + 180 = 180°.
- 1Sun: at sunrise it is in the east, so shadows fall west.
- 2Face: the shadow is on Rohan's right, so Rohan's right is west. Facing south, right is west, so Rohan faces south.
- 3They are face to face, so Kabir faces the opposite way.
How did CLAT ask direction sense?
Two real questions, one from each analytical-era paper. The 2018 options 1–4 are shown as A–D.
'X' started walking towards the west, after travelling 5 kilometres turned exactly to his right and walked 3 kms. Then he decided to walk exactly to his left. On reaching 2 kilometres, he heard a voice and walked back. Then he noticed that, his friend 'Y' was walking towards him from his right side. In which direction is 'Y' walking?
Reveal answer + reasoning
In which direction is Y walking?
A East Tag it
B West Tag it
C North Tag it
D South Tag it
Guess the trap behind each option, then tap to check. Wrong options fail in a handful of predictable ways.
He ends this path facing west; 'walked back' flips him to face east. His right is then south, so Y walks north.
Manoj walks a distance of 5 meters towards North, then he turns to east and walks a distance of 10 meters. Then he turns to his right and covers a distance of 15 meters. He then turns to his left and covers a distance of 15 meters. Which direction is he facing now?
Reveal answer + reasoning
- A — His first direction. Facing changes with every turn.
- C — Treats 'left' as map-left (west) instead of the walker's left.
- D — His facing after the right turn, one step too early.

Can you find your way through these five?
Q1. Facing west, Aarav turns right, then right again, then left. Which way does he face?
West → right = north → right = east → left = north.Q2. Zoya walks 6 km south, turns left and walks 8 km. Where is she from the start?
Facing south, left is east. Net 8 E, 6 S: √(36 + 64) = 10 km south-east. 14 km is the path walked.Q3. What is the straight-line distance from the gate to the chest?
Facings N, E, S, E. Net east 2 + 4 = 6 m; net north 12 − 4 = 8 m. 6-8-10: 10 m. 22 m is the path walked.Q4. In which direction is Rohan jogging?
Evening sun is in the west, so shadows fall east. Her shadow is in front, so she runs east. Rohan comes face to face, so he runs west.Q5. Kabir's café is south-east of the metro station. In which direction is the metro from the café?
Reverse both halves: south → north, east → west. North-west.- Draw north up and write the facing after every turn.
- Right = clockwise (N → E → S → W); left = anticlockwise.
- Facing at the end and position from the start are different questions.
- Net east–west and north–south, then Pythagoras; know 3-4-5, 6-8-10, 5-12-13.
- 'A from B' reversed flips both halves.
- Morning shadows fall west, evening shadows east.
- 'Which direction is he facing?' → final facing → track the facings, ignore distances
- 'How far from the start?' → displacement → net both axes, then √(x² + y²)
- 'In which direction from the start?' → position → read end dot from start dot (N/S first, then E/W)
- 'Towards him from his right / left' → someone else's direction → walker's facing first, then his side
- 'Shadow', 'sunrise', 'evening' → sun → morning shadows west, evening shadows east
- Degrees → angle turn → N 0°, E 90°, S 180°, W 270°; clockwise adds
- 'A is … of B' → reversal → flip both halves for 'B from A'
