⚑ The 20-second answer
Seating questions give you people and position clues; you build one diagram and answer every question off it. Anchor the most-fixed person, place the exact clues, branch on the maybes and let the 'not' clues kill a branch. The #1 trap: reading left and right off your page when the person faces you or the centre.
🎬 The 30-second story
The hostel birthday table

πŸŽ‚
Meher
Meher plans seats for a hostel birthday.
2
β€œSecond to your left? Two seats anticlockwise, then.”

3
β€œShe faces the centre. Her left runs clockwise. Wrong side.”

4
β€œSo every 'left' on this sketch is backwards?”

Meher
Tara lands next to her ex-roommate.
Tara's verdict: Left and right belong to the person in the seat, not your page. Fix the facing first; the rest is counting.

How does CLAT word seating arrangement questions?

Every set gives a cast, a shape and a facing. The questions then read the finished diagram, and the phrasing says which reading.

Which way is left when you sit in a circle?

Picture yourself in the seat. Facing the centre, your left hand points clockwise (viewed from above) and your right anticlockwise. Face outward and both flip.

πŸ“Œ Two counting facts for circles
In a circle of N, k-th to the left = (N βˆ’ k)-th to the right: in 2025's circle of nine, third left is sixth right. 'Opposite' exists only when N is even.

What is the fastest method for seating arrangement questions?

  1. 1
    Shape and facing
Draw it and write the facing on it: an arrow per row, or 'C' in the circle.
  2. 2
    Anchor
Fix the person most clues hang from: top of the circle, or the named end. In 2025 that's Ram.
  3. 3
Exact clues first, maybes as branches
Place every clue that gives one seat. A two-seat clue (neighbour, 'at an end') becomes Case 1 and Case 2.
  4. 4
    Kill, then check every clue
Let the 'not' clues kill a case. Re-check every clue, then count from each person's own seat.
πŸ’‘ Don't start with clue one
A floating clue ('Sohan is third to the right of Shyam', neither placed) waits until it has somewhere to land.

How do linear, two-row and circular seating differ?

Same method, three shapes, three traps. Settle which way 'left' runs first.

🧭 Decision flow
Which way is left in this puzzle?
❓ Are they around a circle?
Yes β†’
❓ Facing the centre?
Yes β†’
Left = clockwise. Right = anticlockwise.
No β†’
Left = anticlockwise. Right = clockwise.
No β†’
❓ Does this person face you?
Yes β†’
Flip: their left is your right.
The top row of two rows always does.
No β†’
No flip: their left is your left.

Linear rows: ends, gaps and 'somewhere to the right'

Ends are free anchors. 'Second to the right of X' is an exact seat; 'to the right of X' only means somewhere on that side, as in CLAT 2018's farewell photo.

Two facing rows: the top row is a mirror

Same position = facing each other. The bottom row faces up the page: no flip. The top row faces you, so their left is your right. Two people face to face have their right hands on opposite sides of the page.

Circles: no ends, so make one

A circle has no start, so anchor at the top and count from there. But a circle has a mirror twin: if the paper never fixes the facing, only neighbour and opposite questions are safe, as in the 2019 dinner set below.

Seating arrangement questions solved step by step

✍️ Worked example Warm-up ⏱ 45 sec
The fest front row
Aarav, Zoya, Kabir, Meher, Rohan and Tara sit in a row facing the stage (north). Tara sits at an end. Zoya is third to the right of Tara. Kabir is Zoya's neighbour. Two people sit between Meher and Kabir. Rohan is second to the left of Kabir. Who is second to the right of Zoya?
  1. 1
Facing: north, so their right is your right. Seats 1–6.
  2. 2
Anchor: three seats to Tara's right exist only from the left end: Tara 1, Zoya 4.
  3. 3
Branch: Kabir 3 (Meher 6) or Kabir 5 (Meher 2).
  4. 4
Kill: Rohan two left of Kabir: case 1 needs seat 1, Tara's. Case 2 gives Rohan 3, Aarav 6.
Answer: Aarav
⚑ The exam-hall shortcut
'Third to the right of Tara' fixes the end.
πŸͺ‘ Seating plan

Every clue checks out
  • βœ“Tara sits at an end
  • βœ“Zoya is 3rd to the right of Tara
  • βœ“Kabir is a neighbour of Zoya
  • βœ“2 people sit between Meher and Kabir
  • βœ“Rohan is 2nd to the left of Kabir
  • βœ“Aarav is 2nd to the right of Zoya
✍️ Worked example CLAT level ⏱ 90 sec
Eight girls, one round table
Meher, Zoya, Tara, Isha, Nidhi, Riya, Sana and Pari sit around a table facing the centre. Zoya sits opposite Meher. Tara is second to the left of Meher. Isha is Zoya's neighbour and sits opposite Pari. Sana is immediately to the right of Pari. Riya is not Meher's neighbour. Who is third to the right of Riya?
  1. 1
Facing: centre, so left = clockwise. Seats 1–8 clockwise.
  2. 2
    Anchor: Meher 1, Zoya 5, Tara 3.
  3. 3
Branch: Isha 4 (Pari 8) or Isha 6 (Pari 2).
  4. 4
Kill: Sana sits one seat anticlockwise of Pari. Case 2 puts her in Meher's seat. So Isha 4, Pari 8, Sana 7.
  5. 5
Fill: Riya can't touch Meher, so Riya 6, Nidhi 2. Anticlockwise from Riya: 5, 4, 3.
Answer: Tara
⚑ The exam-hall shortcut
Opposite pairs place two people at once.
πŸͺ‘ Seating plan
The birthday table, final

Facing the centre: your left is clockwise, your right is anticlockwise.

✍️ Worked example Tricky ⏱ 75 sec
Judges versus debaters
Judges Tara, Kabir, Rohan and Aarav sit in a row facing south; debaters Zoya, Meher, Isha and Nidhi sit facing north, one opposite each judge. Kabir sits at an end and faces Zoya. Meher is second to the right of Zoya. Tara is immediately to the left of Kabir. Rohan faces Meher. Isha is not Zoya's neighbour. Who is second to the right of Aarav?
  1. 1
Facing: judges on top face you (flip); debaters below don't. Seats 1–4 on your page.
  2. 2
Anchor: Meher needs two seats on Zoya's right, so Zoya and Kabir take seat 1; Meher 3.
  3. 3
Flip: Kabir's left is your right: Tara 2. Rohan 3, Aarav 4.
  4. 4
Kill: Isha avoids seat 2: Isha 4, Nidhi 2. Aarav's right is your left: 3, then 2.
Answer: Tara
⚑ The exam-hall shortcut
The top row always reads backwards.
πŸͺ‘ Seating plan

How has CLAT asked seating arrangement?

2018 and 2019 had seating sets; 2025 brought back a six-question circle. Here it is, built the exam-hall way.

πŸͺ‘ Seating plan
CLAT 2025, step 1: Ram anchored, three clues placed
everyone faces the centre Ram ?1 ?2 Rohit ?3 Rohan ?4 Suresh ?5
Every clue checks out
  • βœ“Rohit is 3rd to the left of Ram
  • βœ“Rohan is 4th to the right of Ram
  • βœ“Suresh is 2nd to the right of Ram

? = still empty. Facing the centre, so left = clockwise.

πŸͺ‘ Seating plan
Step 2: Mohit hangs off Suresh
everyone faces the centre Ram ?1 Mohit Rohit ?2 Rohan ?3 Suresh ?4
Every clue checks out
  • βœ“Mohit is 4th to the left of Suresh

Four seats left for Shyam, Sohan, Mohan and Rakesh.

πŸͺ‘ Seating plan
Final: our solution to the CLAT 2025 circle
everyone faces the centre Ram Sohan Mohit Rohit Shyam Rohan Mohan Suresh Rakesh
Every clue checks out
  • βœ“Rohit is 3rd to the left of Ram
  • βœ“Rohan is 4th to the right of Ram
  • βœ“Suresh is 2nd to the right of Ram
  • βœ“Mohit is 4th to the left of Suresh
  • βœ“Sohan is 3rd to the right of Shyam
  • βœ“Mohan is not a neighbour of Ram

Shyam sits between Rohit and Rohan, the only seat leaving Sohan an empty spot 3 to his right. Mohan avoids Ram, so Rakesh takes Ram's right.

πŸ“ Asked in CLAT 2025 Β· Q101 Circular seating, facing centre
Ram, Shyam, Rohit, Mohit, Rohan, Sohan, Mohan, Rakesh and Suresh are sitting around a circle facing the centre. Rohit is third to the left of Ram. Rohan is fourth to the right of Ram. Mohit is fourth to the left of Suresh who is second to the right of Ram. Sohan is third to the right of Shyam. Mohan is not an immediate neighbour of Ram.

Who is the immediate right of Mohit?

ASohan
BRohit
CRam
DData inadequate
Reveal answer + reasoning
Answer: A
The circle comes out unique (above). Facing the centre, Mohit's right is one seat anticlockwise: Sohan.
Why the others fail
  • B β€” Rohit is Mohit's immediate left: the flip trap.
  • C β€” Ram is two seats away.
  • D β€” Every seat is fixed.

ℹ️ When no option fits
On the only arrangement the clues allow, Q97, Q99 and Q102 have no correct option; no key was published for them. Q100's 'Data inadequate' is shaky too: the seating is unique, and Sohan just isn't listed.
πŸ“ Asked in CLAT 2018 Β· Q117 Linear row, facing the viewer
On the farewell day five best friends, namely, Vishal, Anirudh, Gaurav, Mansi and Sapna, clicked their photo, facing the photographer who is on the west. i. Sapna stands to the right of Mansi and Gaurav. ii. Gaurav stands to the left of Vishal and Sapna. iii. Mansi stands between Vishal and Anirudh. iv. There are two people between Anirudh and Gaurav.

Who will be standing at the 2nd position from the right in the photograph?

AVishal
BMansi
CGaurav
DAnirudh
Reveal answer + reasoning
Answer: A
In their own left-to-right: Gaurav is left of Vishal and Sapna, Sapna right of Mansi and Gaurav, two people between Anirudh and Gaurav, Mansi between Vishal and Anirudh. Only one order fits: Gaurav, Vishal, Mansi, Anirudh, Sapna. They face the camera, so the photo reverses it. Second from the photo's right: Vishal. (Q118, 'left of Anirudh', is Mansi, on Anirudh's own left.)
Why the others fail
  • B β€” Mansi is in the middle either way.
  • C β€” Gaurav is 1st from the photo's right.
  • D β€” Anirudh is 2nd from their right: the unflipped answer.
πŸͺ‘ Seating plan
The farewell photo, as the camera sees it

Every clue checks out
  • βœ“Sapna is 2nd to the right of Mansi
  • βœ“Sapna is 4th to the right of Gaurav
  • βœ“Gaurav is immediately to the left of Vishal
  • βœ“Gaurav is 4th to the left of Sapna

πŸ“ Asked in CLAT 2019 Β· Q29 Circle from neighbour clues
A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H want to have a dinner on a round table and they have worked out the following seating arrangements. (a) A will sit beside C. (b) H will sit beside A. (c) C will sit beside E. (d) F will sit beside H. (e) E will sit beside G. (f) D will sit beside F. (g) G will sit beside B. (h) B will sit beside D.

During sitting:

AA will be directly facing C
BB will be directly facing C
CA will be directly facing B
DB will be directly facing D
Reveal answer + reasoning
Answer: C
Our solution (2019 has no official key). Chain the 'beside' clues: H–A–C–E–G–B–D–F, and F beside H closes the loop. With eight seats, facing means four apart: from A, count C, E, G, B. The loop may run either way; opposites don't care.
Why the others fail
  • A β€” C is A's neighbour.
  • B β€” B faces A, not C.
  • D β€” D is B's neighbour.
πŸͺ‘ Seating plan
The 2019 dinner table
everyone faces the centre H A C E G B D F
Every clue checks out
  • βœ“A is a neighbour of C
  • βœ“H is a neighbour of A
  • βœ“C is a neighbour of E
  • βœ“F is a neighbour of H
  • βœ“E is a neighbour of G
  • βœ“D is a neighbour of F
  • βœ“G is a neighbour of B
  • βœ“B is a neighbour of D
  • βœ“A faces / sits opposite B

Its mirror image fits too, so only neighbour and opposite questions are safe.

Q1. Eight people sit around a circle facing the centre. P is third to the left of Q. Where is Q with respect to P?

Six friends stand around a bonfire on the last night of a school trip, all facing outward with their backs to the fire: Aarav, Bina, Chirag, Diya, Esha and Farhan. Diya stands opposite Aarav. Bina is immediately to the left of Aarav. Esha is second to the left of Diya. Chirag is immediately to the right of Esha. Farhan takes the last spot.

Q2. Who is second to the right of Farhan?

Seven aspirants sit in a single row facing the whiteboard (north) for a Sunday doubt session: Tanya, Qasim, Ruhi, Sahil, Uday, Veer and Pihu. Tanya sits at one end. Qasim is third to the right of Tanya. Uday sits next to Qasim. Ruhi is second to the left of Uday. Pihu is immediately to the right of Tanya. Veer is not at an end.

Q3. Who sits second to the left of Veer?

Q4. In two facing rows, Kabir (top row, facing south) sits opposite Zoya. Zoya's right-hand neighbour sits opposite whom?

Q5. Around a circle facing the centre, A is fourth to the right of B and also fourth to the left of B. How many people sit there?

🎯 Seating in a nutshell
  • One diagram answers the whole set.
  • Write the facing first. Facing the centre: left = clockwise. Facing you: flip.
  • Anchor, place, branch, kill with the 'not' clues.
  • Circle of N: k-th left = (N βˆ’ k)-th right.
  • Re-check every clue before answering.
πŸ“Ž Cheat sheet
  • "around a circle facing the centre" β†’ circular β†’ anchor at top, left = clockwise.
  • "facing outward" β†’ circular, flipped β†’ left = anticlockwise.
  • "two rows facing each other" β†’ two-row β†’ top row reads backwards.
  • "in the photograph" β†’ row facing you β†’ flip left and right.

Frequently asked questions

How do you know left and right in circular seating?
Imagine sitting in the seat. Facing the centre, your left hand points clockwise around the table viewed from above, and your right anticlockwise. If everyone faces outward, both flip. Neighbours, opposite seats and gaps read the same whichever way people face.
How do I start a seating arrangement question?
Draw the shape and write the facing on it. Place the person most clues hang from, at the top of a circle or at a named end. Place exact clues next, draw two cases for any clue with two possible seats, and let the negative clues kill one case.
Is seating arrangement still asked in CLAT?
Yes. After four passage-only years, CLAT 2025 set a six-question circular seating puzzle with nine people facing the centre, and 2018 and 2019 both had seating sets. One diagram answers the whole cluster, so building it right is worth several marks.
What should I do if my answer is not in the options?
Re-check every clue against your diagram, especially each left and right. If all hold and only one arrangement survives, trust it and pick 'None of these' if offered, or move on. In CLAT 2025, three seating questions had no correct option and no official key.
